Drive two of the same SUV back to back. That is the moment the right one stops being a guess.

Most lots have one of each, so you end up comparing a Rogue against a RAV4 against whatever happened to show up that week. We buy the Jeep Grand Cherokee, Nissan Rogue and Jeep Compass repeatedly, which means on most days you can drive two or three of the same model and compare trim, mileage and price — instead of deciding whether to take the only example on the lot.

How we buy SUVs, and how to pick one

Two things decide whether a used SUV is worth owning: which ones a dealer buys repeatedly, and whether the size actually fits how you use it.

  1. The honest test is not how many people you carry most days — it is how many you carry on the days that matter. A two-row SUV is roomier for cargo and easier to park, and it is the right answer for four people and a dog. A third row earns its place if you regularly carry five or more, run a carpool, or have grandparents in the mix. What a third row is not good at is cargo: with all seven seats up, most three-row midsize SUVs leave you about as much space as a sedan trunk. Come look at both with the seats folded and it answers itself in about a minute.

  2. SUVs carry more weight than the cars they are based on, and it shows up in predictable places: brakes, suspension bushings, and the all-wheel drive system if it has one. All three are part of the 151-point reconditioning done in our own shop before a vehicle is photographed. Tires get particular attention because an SUV is heavier and harder to stop — we replace any tire at or below 5/32 of an inch and the tires we fit start at 10/32, where New York only requires 2/32. Qualifying vehicles under 85,000 miles then carry the lifetime engine limited warranty.

  3. We are not trying to have one of everything. The Jeep Grand Cherokee, Nissan Rogue and Jeep Compass are the models we buy repeatedly, which means on most days you can drive two or three of the same model back to back and compare trim, mileage and price instead of taking whatever single example happens to be on the lot. That is a genuinely different shopping experience from a store with one of each — and it is why our reconditioning standard holds up on these models. Our own service shop has seen a lot of them.

  4. Compact crossovers like the Jeep Compass or Nissan Rogue handle a commute and a car seat without the fuel bill of something larger. Midsize and three-row SUVs like the Jeep Grand Cherokee L make sense when you are regularly carrying more than four people or towing. If you are not sure, come drive two of them back to back. That is a fifteen-minute answer in person and an hour of guessing online.

What a used SUV actually costs near Schenectady

Used SUV pricing splits by size before it splits by anything else. Compact crossovers — Compass, Rogue, Equinox — occupy the bottom of the market and are where most of our SUV inventory sits. Midsize two-row SUVs run higher, and three-row midsize like the Grand Cherokee L sit higher again for the same year and mileage, because the seats are what you are paying for.

Mileage moves the number more than model year does. A three-year-old SUV with 70,000 miles and a five-year-old one with 40,000 will often be priced within a few hundred dollars of each other, and the lower-mileage car is usually the better buy — which is the opposite of how most people shop.

Our prices are not the lowest you will find in the Capital Region, and that is deliberate. The cheap end of the used SUV market is cheap because nobody reconditioned it: the brakes, tires and suspension that wear fastest on a heavy vehicle are left for the buyer to discover. We replace them before listing, which is the only way to put a lifetime engine limited warranty on a vehicle and mean it. The live starting price above is the real floor on our lot today, not a teaser figure on a stripped-out example.

  • Compact crossovers are the largest and least expensive part of our SUV inventory
  • Tires and brakes replaced before listing, not quoted to you afterwards
  • Free CARFAX vehicle history report on every SUV
  • Lifetime engine limited warranty on qualifying vehicles under 85,000 miles*

Why Schenectady drivers buy their SUV here

Fogg's Automotive has sold and serviced vehicles from the same road since 1955, and the service side is the reason the sales side works. Our shop runs 25 lifts across 28,000 square feet and holds commercial fleet contracts including the United States Postal Service. Every SUV we retail is reconditioned in that shop, by the technicians who also see what these vehicles look like at 120,000 miles.

That matters more on an SUV than on a sedan. Heavier vehicles chew through brakes, tires and suspension bushings, and those are exactly the parts a lot without its own shop leaves alone. We are not a used car lot that sends work out — we are a service operation with a car lot attached, and the 151-point standard exists because our own shop has to stand behind it.

We are also not a buy-here-pay-here dealer. Financing goes through banks and credit unions we have worked with for decades, which generally means a lower rate and a loan that reports to the credit bureaus. If you are driving in from Albany, Clifton Park or Saratoga Springs, that combination is the reason to make the trip rather than buy from whichever lot is nearest.

The commute, the car seat, and the fuel bill

Jeep Compass, Nissan Rogue and the like. Easy to park around Schenectady, cheap enough to run that the daily drive to Albany does not sting, and roomy enough for a car seat and a stroller. This is the biggest part of our SUV inventory and the one most people should start with.

  • Best fuel economy of the three
  • Easiest to park and manoeuvre
  • All-wheel drive widely available
  • Tight for five adults on a long trip

Common questions

It depends far more on size and mileage than on model year. Compact crossovers such as the Jeep Compass and Nissan Rogue are the least expensive and make up most of our SUV inventory; midsize two-row SUVs run higher, and three-row midsize higher again. The live starting price for our current SUV stock is shown at the top of this page and changes as vehicles arrive and sell. Every price includes reconditioning to a 151-point standard and a free CARFAX report — the cheaper SUVs you will find elsewhere in the Capital Region are usually cheaper because that work has not been done.

Any all-wheel drive crossover with good tires will handle a Schenectady winter comfortably — the drivetrain matters less than most buyers assume and the tires matter more. A compact AWD crossover like a Rogue or Compass is the right answer for the large majority of drivers here. Step up to a body-on-frame 4x4 only if you have a long unpaved driveway, plow, or tow. Every vehicle we list has had its brakes, tires, battery and suspension inspected before it was photographed.

A crossover is built on a car platform and a traditional SUV is built on a truck frame. In practice crossovers ride more comfortably and use less fuel, while body-on-frame SUVs tow more and handle rough ground better. Most of what people shop for today — the Rogue, the Compass — are crossovers, and for Capital Region commuting that is usually the right choice.

Slightly, and mostly in consumables. They are heavier, so tires and brakes wear faster and cost more to replace, and they use more fuel. The mechanical systems themselves are not inherently less reliable. Because tires and brakes are replaced during our reconditioning rather than left for you, that difference lands later in ownership than it would buying elsewhere.

Yes. Bring it in and we will appraise it while you look. We physically inspect every vehicle we appraise, which is also why our offer is one we will stand behind rather than an online estimate that changes when the car arrives.

There is no single number, but our lifetime engine limited warranty applies to qualifying vehicles under 85,000 miles, and that bar is a reasonable guide. Above it, condition and service history matter far more than the odometer — a well-kept 95,000-mile SUV is often a better buy than a neglected 60,000-mile one.

Our SUV inventory changes daily as vehicles arrive and sell. The live count and every current SUV — with photos, mileage and pricing — is on this page above.

The large majority are, though we do keep some front-wheel drive SUVs for buyers who want the space without the extra cost. If all-wheel drive is the thing you actually care about, our AWD and 4x4 page is the better place to start — it covers trucks and sedans as well as SUVs.

Qualifying vehicles under 85,000 miles at the time of purchase include the Fogg's For Life lifetime engine limited warranty at no extra cost, and it lasts as long as you own the vehicle. Ask us to confirm coverage on any specific SUV.
