A Wrangler is a commitment. The Compass is what most people actually need from the badge.

The Compass, and where it sits in the range

Why it is the sensible Jeep, what Trailhawk adds, and how it compares either side.

  1. It sits in a sensible place. Fuel economy is respectable for a small SUV with four-wheel drive available, tires are ordinary sizes rather than the expensive large-diameter items a Grand Cherokee wears, and parts are widely stocked. It is not as cheap to run as a sedan — a crossover with all-wheel drive never is — but the gap is smaller than most people assume, and the traction is worth it here for several months of the year.

  2. It is one of the three models we buy repeatedly, and that changes what shopping for one here is like. On most days you can drive two or three Compasses back to back and compare trim, mileage and price against each other rather than deciding whether to take the only one on the lot. Our technicians have seen a great many of them, which is why our reconditioning standard on this model is built on experience rather than a generic checklist.

  3. A Wrangler is a commitment. The Compass is what most people actually need from the badge: a compact SUV that parks easily, does not punish you on fuel, and still has a genuine four-wheel drive system for the four months a year it earns its keep here. Trailhawk is the version worth knowing about. It adds a more capable 4x4 system, extra ground clearance, skid plates and hill descent control. If you live up an unplowed road or spend weekends off pavement, that is the one to look for.

  4. The Renegade is smaller and cheaper and fine for a commute, but tight in the back. The Grand Cherokee is a size class up — more comfortable, more capable, more expensive to buy and run. The Compass is the middle answer, and it is the one we sell the most of.

Smaller and cheaper

A size down from the Compass and less money to buy and run. Fine for a commute, and genuinely easy to park. The rear seat and cargo area are tight, so bring whatever you actually carry and try it before you decide.

  • Cheapest way into the badge
  • Very easy to park
  • Tight in the back
  • Less comfortable over distance

Common questions

Condition and service history matter more than the model. The areas worth inspecting are the four-wheel drive hardware and the cooling system, both of which are covered by our 151-point process before a vehicle is listed. Every Compass here also comes with a free CARFAX.

Trailhawk adds a more capable four-wheel drive system, extra ground clearance, skid plates, tow hooks and hill descent control. It is meaningfully better on rough ground and slightly worse on fuel and ride comfort. Buy it if you will use it.

For four people, comfortably. For five adults on a long trip, it is tight. If you regularly carry more than four or need a third row, look at the Grand Cherokee L instead.

Most do, but front-wheel drive versions were sold too. Check the individual vehicle rather than assuming, or start from our AWD and 4x4 page, which filters for it directly.

With 4x4, yes — and Trailhawk versions are better again thanks to extra ground clearance and a more capable four-wheel drive system. As with any vehicle, tires matter as much as the drivetrain; we inspect them as part of reconditioning.

Trailhawk is Jeep's off-road-oriented trim. On the Compass it means a more capable 4x4 system with a low range, increased ground clearance, skid plates, hill descent control and Trail Rated badging.

Running costs are typical for a compact SUV, and parts are widely available. The bigger variable is how the previous owner treated it — which is what the CARFAX and our 151-point inspection are for.
