Under 30,000 miles, most of the expensive service intervals are still ahead of the car rather than behind it — but so is the wear you would otherwise be inheriting. The original tires usually still have real tread, the brakes are nowhere near their first replacement, and the timing belt or chain, water pump and transmission service are all far enough out that they are somebody else’s problem years from now. That is the actual value of low mileage: not that the car is newer, but that the bills are further away.
A car can cover 20,000 miles and still have been neglected — skipped oil changes, an accident that was repaired badly, or years sitting still, which is its own kind of wear on seals, belts and batteries.
