The Altima does the unglamorous things well, which is exactly what makes it a good used car.

The Altima, trim by trim

What the car is good at, which trim to buy, and how it compares inside the Nissan range.

  1. The Altima uses a continuously variable transmission, and it is the component that decides whether a used one is a good buy. Serviced on schedule it is smooth and efficient; neglected it becomes the most expensive repair on the car. The difference is fluid history, not luck. We check transmission behaviour and fluid condition before we buy the vehicle, and an Altima that does not pass goes to auction rather than onto our lot. You also get the free CARFAX so you can see the service record yourself rather than take our word for it.

  2. This is where the car earns its reputation. Fuel economy is genuinely good for a midsize, tires and brakes are ordinary sizes at ordinary prices, and parts are widely available so no repair requires a specialist. Insurance sits lower than an equivalent crossover. None of that is exciting, and all of it is why the Altima is one of the models we buy repeatedly — it does the unglamorous things well, which is exactly what you want from a commuter you keep for five years.

  3. The Altima is a midsize sedan that does the unglamorous things well: it is comfortable over a long commute, returns genuinely good fuel economy, and its common failure points are well understood and inexpensive to address before a car is listed. That last part matters to us more than it does to most sellers, because we are the ones warrantying the engine. Trim levels are worth understanding. The S is the value entry, the SV adds the equipment most people actually want, the SR firms up the suspension and looks the part, and the SL adds leather and driver assistance. Altimas are also available with all-wheel drive, which is unusual in this class and very relevant here.

    Why we keep buying Altimas

  4. If you are cross-shopping within Nissan: the Sentra is the smaller, cheaper compact and is the right answer if your commute is short and the budget is tight. The Rogue is the crossover — higher seating position, more cargo, more money. The Altima sits between them on price and beats both on highway comfort and fuel economy.

Which Altima trim to buy

Trim matters more than model year for most shoppers. Here is what each one gets you.

The value entry

The basic car, and a perfectly good one. You get the same drivetrain and the same fuel economy as the rest of the range without paying for equipment you may not use. Right if the budget is the priority.

  • Lowest price for a given model year
  • Same drivetrain and economy as higher trims
  • Cloth seats, smaller screen
  • Fewer driver assistance features

Common questions

Well-maintained examples routinely pass 150,000 miles, and transmission service history is the biggest single factor in getting there. That is why we inspect the CVT before buying a car and hand you a free CARFAX with it.

It is front-wheel drive on most examples, which handles a Capital Region winter well on good tires. Tires do far more of the work than drivetrain for stopping and steering — we replace anything at or below 5/32 of an inch and fit tires starting at 10/32. Some model years also offered all-wheel drive.

The Sentra is smaller, cheaper to buy and cheaper to run, and it is the right answer for a short commute on a tight budget. The Altima is more comfortable over distance, quieter at highway speed and roomier in the back. If you drive to Albany daily, the Altima is worth the difference.

Rather than ruling out a model year, look at the individual car. Transmission service history and accident record tell you far more than the year on the title, and both are visible on the free CARFAX that comes with every vehicle here.

Broadly, yes — the Altima's weak points are well documented, which is exactly why a reconditioned example matters. The CVT transmission is the component to ask about; we inspect it as part of our 151-point process and we will show you the CARFAX before you ask.

Recent Altimas are available with all-wheel drive, which is uncommon in the midsize sedan class and a real advantage in a Capital Region winter. Availability varies by trim and model year — the live inventory above shows exactly what we have.

S is the base trim, SV adds the convenience and safety equipment most buyers want, SR is the sportier suspension and appearance package, and SL adds leather and more driver assistance. For most shoppers the SV is the value sweet spot.
